A Deighton man has been jailed for six months after he twice breached a restraining order by contacting his ex-girlfriend.

Leeds Crown Court heard Justin James Luke Riley was given a similar sentence in December for an earlier breach but on his release on February 1 he immediately contacted Charlotte Hutchinson again via Facebook.

Michael Jowett prosecuting told the court the restraining order had been made by Kirklees Magistrates Court on October 15 last year after he was convicted of violence and harassment towards her. The order prohibited contact with her or entering the street where she lives in Holmfirth.

Mr Jowett said Charlotte Hutchinson responded to the message and the relationship between her and Riley was “rekindled” for a short time February in spite of the order.

However she quickly regretted resuming the relationship and during the week of February 15 told Riley it was over between them and that he was no longer welcome at her home.

He pleaded for them to continue but then sent abusive text messages. When she blocked his number he used another phone to call her and told her if he was sent back to prison he would “be going out with a bang.”

Georgina Goring representing Riley said there had been some consent from the complainant to initially allow him to stay at her home but he accepted things had changed.

He expressed remorse for his actions and was no longer interested in resuming contact with her. He was also using his time in custody to complete an IT course and hoped in the future to go to college.

Riley, 28 of Bernard Street, Deighton admitted two breaches of the restraining order.

Judge Tom Bayliss QC told him: “You have got to learn to behave yourself within the context of a relationship.”
