A woman has appeared in court charged with arson following a blaze at a Deighton house.

Firefighters were called to the address in Glenfield Avenue at 7pm on Monday.

It was feared that there was someone in the house at the time but that turned out not to be the case.

The whole of the property, belonging to Kirklees Council, suffered smoke damage and a police investigation was launched.

Cheryl McEwan, who lives at the address, appeared before Kirklees magistrates in connection with the incident.

The 33-year-old is charged with arson with intent to endanger life.

Prosecutor Alex Bozman told the Huddersfield court that the incident relates to an attempt by McEwan to damage her estranged husband’s property.

McEwan spoke only to confirm her personal details during the brief hearing.

Magistrates sent her case to Leeds Crown Court.

She will first appear there on July 27 and was remanded in custody.
