Workmen are close to completing the demolition of a Huddersfield landmark.

They spent yesterday tearing down the final parts of the University of Huddersfield sports hall on the Queensgate campus.

The hall has stood on the corner of the site overlooking Shorehead roundabout for the past 25 years but has now been replaced by a new multi-million pounds student support centre, which opened earlier this year.

The demolition work started two weeks ago and now the site is expected to be landscaped.

University chiefs also plan to demolish the adjoining and historic Brunswick Building.

They want to create a new feature for the site but have no immediate plans to start work on it.
