FOOTBALL legend Denis Law will donate the £1,000 he is due to receive for opening a Huddersfield care centre to Meningitis UK.

Law is returning tomorrow to Huddersfield, where he started his playing career in 1956, to open The Oakes Care Centre. Meridian Healthcare, which owns the 60-bed home for older people in Oakes, offered Law £1,000 to present to a charity of his choice, for opening the centre.

The former Manchester United and Manchester City player has long promoted Meningitis UK’s message across the country after his son Andrew recovered from the disease. He is a patron of the charity.

Law said: “My son Andrew suffered from meningitis and meningococcal septicaemia when he was 24, but thankfully recovered, so Meningitis UK is a charity that is very close to my heart.

“It is a great privilege to be a patron of such a worthwhile cause. I really enjoy taking part in their events and helping to raise money to fund the charity’s important search for a vaccine.

“It’s my pleasure to donate the £1,000. I know first hand how terrifying this disease can be and want to help prevent others from going through similar suffering.”

Law, who was capped 30 times for Scotland, will open the centre with help from Meningitis UK founder Steve Dayman.
