FATHER and son team Paul and Mark Round are out of the Paris to Dakar Rally.

The pair's turbo charger failed, leaving them stranded in the desert near Atar, in Mauritania, Africa.

They are now limping to Dakar in their broken down all-terrain vehicle which Mark, 27, was driving and dad Paul, 47, was navigating.

The pair set out from their Lower Cumberworth base on December 27 and the race started on New Years' Eve.

Martin Coulson, spokesman for the Rounds' team Rally Raid UK, said: "The Rounds are nurturing a sick car back to Dakar with a dead turbo charger.

"A support vehicle went to try and find Paul and Mark with a replacement turbo charger. They were stuck in the desert after running out of fuel and buying fuel from a local organisation at some ridiculous price."

Mr Coulson also confirmed several other racers from the 21-strong Rally Raid UK team had been forced to pull out after crashes and mechanical problems. However several remain including biker Mick Extance who finished 27th in stage seven.

Last year the Rounds came 28th, the best finish for a private team, and only eight places behind rally legend Colin McRae - who was leading this year's race before crashing out last week.
