A VERY special Christmas is on the cards for two Kirklees boys.
Five-year-old Edward Atkinson, a pupil at Kirkroyds Infant School, Wooldale, is to have one of his paintings Penguins in the Snow turned into the school's Christmas card.
And nine-year-old Jacob Green, a pupil at Kirkburton C of E Infant School, won a £600 laptop computer for his school after his Christmas card design was voted the best in a competition run by radio station Home FM. He also won a keyboard and mouse set for himself.
Edward's painting, which was spotted by head teacher Chris Wood on a display put up by his teacher, will be printed by Reprographics of Huddersfield.
Mrs Wood said: "I saw the picture and thought it was stunning. I knew it would make a wonderful card for the school, so I asked Edward whether we could keep it.
"It really is a superb painting, especially considering Edward was only four when he actually painted it."
The card will be sent out by the school to all its partners, suppliers and members of the governing body. This year is the first time the school has sent out Christmas cards.
Mrs Wood said: "It's a great way of celebrating the creative talents of our pupils and producing an unusual Christmas card at the same time."
The radio station set children the task of designing a card on a futuristic theme, asking youngsters what Christmas would be like in the year 2050.
Jacob's design features Santa Claus in a hover-sleigh over Huddersfield with a sign sticking out of a roof saying Please Hover Slowly Over Huddersfield.
The laptop computer was donated by Huddersfield laptop specialists Easy Computers.
Nick Glynne, managing director of the firm, chose the design. He said: "It was so hard to choose between them. I thought the majority would chose IT as their theme but surprisingly most designs were based on the theme of space."
The cards will be printed and distributed by Home FM.
Lorna Blagborough, of Lepton Junior School and Hana Goulden, of St Joseph's Junior School, Dalton, were runners-up and won a multimedia keyboard and mouse set.
