A WITNESS who may have crucial information about the fatal stabbing of a teenager has been asked to come forward.

Detectives are still hunting for evidence about the death of Craig Hepburn earlier this month.

The 19-year-old from Scotland was killed in Marsden in the early hours of July 7.

His friend Connor Paton, 18, was seriously injured in the same incident near Manchester Road.

Anthony David Driver, 36, and Luke Aaron Elliott, 21, appeared at Leeds Crown Court last week charged with murdering Mr Hepburn.

Now Det Sergeant Jane Taylor, of West Yorkshire Police’s Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, has appealed to villagers for help collecting evidence.

Detectives wish to speak to a man with “fair hair” who may have seen the suspects around the time of the stabbing, shortly after midnight on Saturday, July 7.

Det Sgt Taylor was joined by relatives of the murdered teenager as she made the appeal at a meeting at Marsden Mechanics Hall.

She said: “People are trying to do everything they can to help the investigation.

“If anyone knows anybody that might have seen the suspects around midnight, we’re still keen for people to come forward and help. This is an ongoing enquiry.” Det Sgt Taylor made the appeal to around 40 residents at a meeting of Kirklees Council’s Colne Valley Area Committee.

Chairman Clr Paul Salveson told the meeting: “Please give any help that you can.

“Our thanks to the family for coming along and you have our heartfelt sympathy.”

Mr Hepburn travelled down to Marsden to visit his uncle Scott Hepburn, who lives in the village.

The teenage musician had entertained drinkers in The Wine Bar on Peel Street with a bagpipe performance on the evening of Friday, July 6.

Mr Hepburn and his friend Mr Paton – also of Linwood in Renfrewshire – were attacked as they returned home in the early hours of July 7.

Anyone with information about the incident, which happened near the junction between Manchester Road and Fall Lane, can call the police non-emergency number 101.
