A DEVELOPER has asked for more time to expand Huddersfield’s main shopping centre.

Kirklees Council gave permission in 2008 for the extension to the Kingsgate Centre. But the move was put on ice because of the credit crunch.

And now W D Kingsgate has asked Kirklees to extend the three-year time limit to allow the development to go ahead.

The Kingsgate 2 development would take in 0.6 hectares next to the centre, including Oldgate House, Wildcats nightclub and the former Palace Theatre.

The extension would include one shop fronting on to Kirkgate and seven smaller stores. The two-storey extension would boost the centre’s retail floorspace by 11,154sq metres. There would also be 190 new parking spaces. The council’s Huddersfield Planning Sub-committee will decide on the issue at its meeting at Huddersfield Town Hall at 1pm on Thursday.
