Builders plaguing residents in Lindley Moor have been ordered to clean up their act.

Developers Harron Homes are building a new estate, Farriers Croft, on land off Crosland Road.

But residents have accused the firm’s contractors of leaving the road caked in mud.

Motorists are shunning the road, causing traffic congestion on surrounding routes at peak times.

The development is just the start of large scale work on Lindley Moor, which will see dozens of new homes and industrial units built on green fields.

Residents say their pleas to the company have fallen on deaf ears and Grahame Heap, 72, of Oakes, said: “Residents are really angry about this.

“We appreciate the contractors have a job to do but they are being completely disrespectful to local residents who will probably have to live with development going on for up to two years.

“It’s like someone bursting into your living room and stomping large, muddy footprints on the carpet. It’s totally alien what they are doing.”

Lindley Tory councillor Gemma Wilson was inundated with complaints from residents. When the company failed to return her calls she visited the site – and ended up sweeping the road herself.

Clr Wilson called in Kirklees Council to investigate and the authority has now issued a Planning Contravention Notice ordering the developer to make improvements.

“It was so bad a lot of neighbours wanted the site closing down,” she said. “The road was becoming coated in mud and was getting dangerous.”

Work on the site started about six weeks ago and another resident, who asked not to be named, said: “It’s been horrible. Water has been dumped on the road, causing mud.

“When we complained they said it was all right because it was filtered water. Why does that make a difference? That just sums their lack of respect.

“It’s a public highway and people should be able to use it.”

A spokesman for Kirklees Council said: “The council has raised a number of outstanding planning matters with the developer and have issued a Planning Contravention Notice on the construction site.

“If positive steps towards resolving the issues are not taken by the developer we will consider further enforcement options.

“Officers are actively monitoring the construction site and the condition of Crosland Road.”

A spokesman for Harron Homes said: “Mud on the roads is a regular occurrence on all new build developments across the country, especially during this time of year when there is likely to be more rain.

“We are fully aware of the issue at our Farriers Cross development and are actively addressing residents’ concerns.

“We are doing our utmost to minimise any disruption and have increased the number of road cleans which are now taking place several times each week.”
