PLANS have been tabled to bulldoze a car showroom and build 24 flats and 22 houses.

The Beaumont Brothers showroom at Huddersfield Road, Meltham, could be demolished and replaced by a housing development.

Architect Jeremy Child said he was hopeful the development would get the approval of councillors.

Mr Child, who works for Huddersfield-based Acumen, said: "There have been several problems we have had to look at, including three nearby listed cottages.

"But the development is designed as such that it will open up the space so the listed buildings can be seen from the road.

"It is also partly in a conservation area, so we have had to match the new buildings to those that surround it.

"It was discussed by Meltham Town Council and I am pleased with the feedback they have given.

"Obviously there is a long way to go yet, but we are very hopeful."

The developments include three and four bedroom town houses and one and two bedroom flats.

A spokeswoman for Meltham Town Council said although no official decision had yet been made, the plans were encouraging.

She said: "The comments made were complimentary to the develop- ment, although concerns were raised that the flats situated at the Chequers end of the site may dominate existing houses."

The plans are expected to go before councillors next month.
