PLANS to regenerate a Brighouse waterside spot have been unveiled.

And it could mean the area around Brighouse Marina could become a hub for food, living and work. New jobs could also be created with the project.

Developer Graeme Henderson has submitted a planning application to Calderdale Council for a change of use for The Boathouse at the Victoria Works site at Wharf Street, next to Sainsbury’s supermarket.

Mr Henderson, of Northowram, wants permission for a mixed use of the site, which overlooks Brighouse marina.

The planning application shows the site, which is currently vacant, would have a large ground floor restaurant, one apartment and 13 smaller units, offices or space for a gallery.

There would be an extension to The Boathouse to replace one which had to be pulled down as it was structurally unsound.

The planning report says: “Extensive discussions have been held by the applicant with Richard Delves at the Canals and Rivers Trust.

“He was pleased to hear of the proposals to bring the property back in to use and provide some facilities which should be of benefit to canal users.”

The whole of The Boathouse would be refurbished inside and outside and the developer said he hoped to use local suppliers and trades persons where possible, creating 49 jobs.

The Calder and Hebble Navigation, running for 21 miles from the Aire and Calder Navigation at Wakefield to Sowerby Bridge, was one of the first navigable waterways into the Pennines.

Work began in 1758 to make the River Calder navigable above Wakefield.

Sir John Ramsden’s Canal, now known as the Huddersfield Broad , was opened in 1776, providing a branch to Huddersfield.

The Calder and Hebble and now forms part of the South Pennine Ring.
