A DRIVER from Dewsbury is fighting for his life after his car crashed in Barnsley.

The 20-year-old is in a stable but critical condition at Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield.

His red Toyota Yaris collided with the kerb at about 7.10pm on Thursday on the A61 Westwood New Road travelling towards Sheffield from the Tankersley roundabout.

The car veered across the road and back again before hitting a lamppost and crashing into a wooded area.

The driver’s injuries included damage to his head and a broken arm and rib.

An 18-year-old male back seat passenger in the car suffered serious head injuries, and was taken to Barnsley District General, where he was detained.

A third passenger, a 20-year-old woman who was in the passenger seat of the car, was taken to hospital in Barnsley but suffered minor injuries, and has been discharged.

All three victims were from Dewsbury, police said.
