A MAN assaulted his girlfriend and hurled racist abuse at her in the middle of a busy train station, a court heard.

Darren Croft, of Moorcroft Road, Dewsbury, admitted the attack when he appeared before Kirklees magistrates yesterday.

They were told how the incident happened as Croft and his partner Davinea Ammon were supposedly enjoying a day trip to the coast.

Alex Bosman, prosecuting, said that on September 17 the pair were on their way home from Scarborough.

He said they were drinking in a pub near to York railway station and an argument developed when Croft became jealous of some of Miss Ammon’s behaviour.

Mr Bosman said: “She decided to catch a train back to Dewsbury and was followed by him.

“In the street he shouted ‘black b****’ at her, she was followed by him up to the station.

In the station he grabbed her arms and twisted her skin and spat at her.”

Croft was also before the court facing further charges of theft.

He was accused of stealing a vacuum cleaner from Halfords in Dewsbury on November 11 and failing to surrender to court.

Simon Lindley, defending, said Croft’s relationship had ended since the incident at the station.

Mr Lindley told magistrates that Croft has a drug habit that he is trying to control.

He said that the shoplifting offences on his record are down to his need to fund his addiction.

Magistrates gave Croft a community order for nine months with a six month drug rehabilitation requirement.

They also ordered him to pay £85 towards court costs.
