A schoolgirl ended up in hospital after a woman gave her cannabis.

The 12-year-old fell ill when Dewsbury mum Faranah Williams allowed her to have a few puffs of her joint.

The mum-of-one, from Princess Lane in Chickenley, admitted supplying a class B drug.

The 21-year-old said she believed that the girl was older than her years because she was wearing a top bearing a symbol of the drug.

Williams, who has a young daughter, was talking to the child as she stood in the street smoking the drug on July 1.

Kirklees Magistrates’ Court heard that the girl asked Williams if she could share the cigarette with her.

Williams handed it over and the girl took a few puffs of it.

Andy Day, mitigating, said: “Stupidly she allowed this. The young girl was wearing a jumper with a representation of cannabis on it.

“The girl told her that she smoked it and was allowed to have a smoke.

“She (Williams) perhaps felt she was more sophisticated than her years suggested.”

But the girl quickly became ill and had to be taken to hospital.

Mr Day said: “As soon as she realised something was wrong she took the child to her auntie’s and owned up to it.”

The solicitor added that as Williams has since stopped smoking cannabis herself.

He said: “She understands completely the situation that she’s placed this child in and couldn’t be more sorry if she tried.”

District judge Michael Fanning called Williams “unbelievably stupid”.

He said the fact that she was drunk at the time would have affected her thinking skills.

Judge Fanning acknowledged that she did try to help when he realised the youngster was ill.

He said this helped hospital staff in their treatment of her.

Williams was given an eight-week curfew between 7pm and 7am as punishment.

She must also pay £85 costs and £60 victim surcharge.
