A DEWSBURY police officer turned midwife to help deliver a bouncing baby boy at the roadside.

Pc Dean Hodgson was with Pcs Stephen Oliver and Natalie Knox on on the Gildersome bypass when a car pulled up alongside them.

Inside was heavily-pregnant Mrs Wade, her husband James and her mother Kay, and the couple’s two other children Luke, three, and two-year-old Caitlin.

Sarah had gone into labour so the officers called an ambulance and used their vehicles and coats to shield Sarah from view.

Pc Hodgson followed the ambulance to hospital – only for it to pull up at Birstall town centre where Sarah gave birth to a baby boy, Alex.

Pc Hodgson said: “In six years’ service it’s the first time I have ever come across a woman giving birth on the roadside.”
