A VAN caught fire after a mechanic was taking its engine out.

Firefighters were called to a garage on Lowe Street in the Springfield area of Dewsbury after a mechanical fault sparked a blaze in the works van at 1.30pm yesterday.

Luckily, the mechanic managed to move the engine and isolate the fire before it spread any further.

Dewsbury watch manager Richard Carr said: “We can’t be sure how it started. A guy had been working on the van and something ignited and spread to the engine compartment and towards the passenger side.

“He wasn’t hurt – he was quite lucky he wasn’t injured when he was moving the engine outside.

“The worry was if he left it where it was the fire could have spread.

“It was an accident but we had to make sure a petrol leak from the tank didn’t cause further problems.”

Fire crews from Dewsbury were at the scene for up to an hour.
