DIABETES UK has launched a 90-minute challenge to get more people active in 2012.

Being overweight and inactive are two of the main risks for developing diabetes, which affects over 375,000 people in the region.

The charity is inviting Huddersfield people to take up a new exercise, such as swimming, dancing or Nordic walking, for an hour and a half every week for at least a month.

Diabetes UK’s northern and Yorkshire manager Linda Wood said: “It is vital that we continue to encourage people to maintain a healthy, balanced diet and undertake regular physical activity to reduce their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.”

The challenge coincides with the 90th anniversary of the first successful treatment with insulin. The charity is also asking participants to consider raising £90 to help the fight against the disease.
