A COUPLE who met when their families moved on to the newly built Brackenhall estate celebrate their diamond wedding yesterday.

William and Kathleen Charlesworth's families were the first to move into the new homes in the 1940s and lived just doors away from each other in Hopkinson Road, Sheepridge.

They started courting when they were about 17, and married at Christ Church Woodhouse in 1944.

They are pictured now and on their wedding day.

The couple, who live in Highgate Avenue, Lepton, celebrated with a meal for family and friends and are also to have a day trip to the Lakes and a holiday in Blackpool.

Mr Charlesworth, 80, worked at David Browns in Meltham for 34 years as a gear cutter.

Mrs Charlesworth, 79, worked as a winder for almost 50 years.

The couple have a son and daughter and three granddaughters.

Mrs Charlesworth is a volunteer in the Cancer Research UK shop in Ramsden Street and enjoys knitting and walking.

Mr Charlesworth enjoys gardening and meeting his friends at Meltham Liberal Club.
