AN UPPER Cumberworth couple are celebrating their diamond wedding.

Frank and Mamie Sharples were married at Balmaghie Church in south west Scotland on October 15, 1949.

They met three years earlier when Scottish-born Mrs Sharples was visiting an aunt in Helme and asked Mr Sharples for directions to a dance.

The couple spent the first 42 years of their marriage living in Meltham where Mr Sharples grew up before making Cumberworth Lane their home.

Mr Sharples worked as a plumber for David Brown’s in Lockwood, then for Kirklees and Meltham councils.

Mrs Sharples worked at the Magdale Vinery shop for 25 years.

The couple have a son and two grandchildren.

They enjoy attending a weekly dance club in Meltham, gardening and attending music concerts.

The couple celebrated their anniversary with family and friends at a party at Durker Roods.
