AN OAKES couple are celebrating their diamond wedding.
George and Elaine Kidger, of Millfield Close, marked 60 years of marriage with their two sons, Malcolm and Graham, five grandchildren and one great granddaughter.
George, 82, came from Tanshelf in Pontefract, served in the Navy on destroyers during the war and then became a heating engineer at Watsons in Huddersfield. For the last 10 years before he retired he worked as a self employed heating engineer, working on many public buildings.
Elaine, 79, grew up in the Beaumont Park area with three sisters and a brother.
Her family later emigrated to Australia and they became distanced but the couple have enjoyed two memorable extended holidays in Australia staying with family in later years.
Elaine worked at a children’s home in LIndley and for many years and at Courtaulds in Plover Road, Lindley, as a weaver.
The couple who met in Greenhead Park and married at St Barnabas’s Church, Crosland Moor, are also looking forwards to a holiday in St Ives as part of their celebrations.
