A ‘PICTURE perfect’ couple who met queuing for the cinema have celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.

Kenneth and Barbara Braund, from Dalton, spent a long weekend at the seaside in Blackpool and are having a party at Kirkheaton Cricket Club with their family to mark the occasion.

The happy couple, pictured now and on their wedding day, have three children, nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Kenneth, 85, is originally from Kent and came to Huddersfield during the war as part of the Royal Corps of Signals.

He was sent to a holding unit in Kirkburton in 1945 and was visiting the old cinema in the village when he met local girl Barbara.

He said: “I remember the time we met, I was being silly throwing coins and Barbara was saying who’s that silly beggar being daft.”

Kenneth was later posted to Sierra Leone, but came back two years later for Barbara and they married in 1950.

For many years he worked at William Arnold and Son boiler makers in Paddock.

Barbara, now 80, was an assistant at disability charity Mencap for 17 years.
