MR Timothy Hare is the new High Sheriff of West Yorkshire.
He was installed in a ceremony at Leeds Combined Court Centre.
Mr Hare, who is married to Diana, is a director of Leeds-based woollen and worsted manufacturers and distributors James Hare Ltd.
He also has extensive commercial property interests in and around the Leeds area.
The High Sheriff is appointed by the Queen with the main duty of looking after High Court Judges when they are sitting in the county.
Other official duties include acting as electoral returning officer in certain constituencies.
The ceremony was presided over by The Honorable Mr Justice Elias.
It is the oldest secular lay office in the United Kingdom after the Crown and dates back to Saxon times. Before Lord Lieutenants were created in Tudor times, the High Sheriff was the most powerful person in each county, collecting taxes, judging court cases, pursuing criminals and supervising hangings.
