An award-winning company supplying washroom products has been bought for an undisclosed sum.

Disposables UK, based at the former David Brown tractor plant at Meltham Mills, has been acquired by Northwood Paper Sales Ltd, based at Harrow, Middlesex.

Bosses at Disposables UK announced the deal to the firm’s 85-strong workforce today and insisted: “It’s business as usual.”

The company supplies toilet rolls and other washroom, cleaning and hygiene products for the so-called “away from home sector” – with customers including hotels, universities, colleges and sports venues.

A joint statement said the parties had enjoyed a long and successful relationship since the time when Disposables UK was led by the late Trevor Storer, who founded the business, and that relationship had continued under its current management.

David Burkill, managing director of Disposables UK Ltd, said: “This is a very exciting and positive move for Disposables UK and is the next stage in our development.

“In Northwood, we have found a buyer that suits our business, with whom we already have a strong relationship and who are a family-run business with a similar approach. It will benefit our business and our customers.”

Paul Fecher, chairman of Northwood, said the activities of Disposables UK Ltd and Northwood business Hygiene Products Ltd were complementary.

The acquisition meant Disposable UK’s product range, including Bay West, Optimum Professional and Optimum ProWipers, and Northwood’s Leonardo, Essentials, Whisper and Perform brands would be available to the market from a new unified supply source.

Mr Fecher said: “We are pleased to welcome David Burkill and Paul Halliwell (sales director), the Meltham management team and all the staff of Disposables UK Ltd into our family of companies as we continue to grow our businesses in the UK ‘away from home’ sector.”

The link-up brings together Disposables UK’s Meltham site with other paper converting factories in North Wales and Shropshire as well as tissue mills in Cheshire, Lancaster and South Wales.

Among its major contracts, Disposables UK supplied hand towels, toilet tissues and soaps for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It has also supplied washrooms at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium, the O2 Arena and Twickenham. The firm also distributes to Europe with France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark and Rumania among its key markets.

The company was named Examiner Business of the Year in 2013 following its move from several sites to a 150,000sq ft single site at the former tractor plant.

Northwood, which has 580 employees, has interests in paper importing and recycling as well as hygiene products.
