WORK is being carried out to repair a broken water pipe suspected of causing floods - despite a row over who will pay the bill.

The pipe is believed to have been broken when a gas main was replaced in Back O'Dam, Slaithwaite.

Kirklees Council is fixing the pipe - but will argue with gas distribution company Transco over who pays.

Liberal Democrat councillor David Ridgway said water had been leaking on to the road surface for years and became a flood when it was wet.

The road was important as it was the major access to Slaithwaite village centre from the main A62, he said.

Clr Margaret Fearnley, another of the area's Liberal Democrat councillors, said: "This winter, the wet surface has yet again become a death trap when the water froze into a thick ice cap."

A council spokesman said negotiations were taking place on who would pay the cost of the work.
