A YOUNG man appeared in court in handcuffs, accused of assaulting his mother.
Brian Burton, 20, of Thomas Street, Huddersfield, remained handcuffed throughout the 15-minute hearing at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court.
Alex Bozman, prosecuting, said that on his previous outing to court on June 22 he had made threats and had to be forcibly returned to his cell.
Mr Bozman said: “He caused injuries to two officers, one of whom is still off work.”
The defendant is said to have beaten his mother, Christine Kitching, on June 21 at the junction of Bradley Boulevard and Long Hill Road in Sheepridge, Huddersfield.
Sarah Stewart, defending, did not oppose the application for the defendant to be handcuffed and chairman of the bench Richard Barker agreed to the request.
Ms Stewart said she was not prepared to submit a plea as she did not consider her client “fit to plead” though his precise mental health problems remained unclear.
The bench remanded him in custody until July 18 when he will appear in court via a video link.
