POLICE divers searched a river last night after a car plunged from a road into the water, leaving one person dead and another missing.
The accident was at about 3.30pm yesterday at Marske Bridge, near the A6108 Richmond to Leyburn road.
A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said a blue Nissan Micra left the road and went into the River Swale where it was almost totally submerged.
More than an hour later, firefighters pulled a body from the vehicle but officers fear another person thought to be in the car at the time is missing.
Police divers, a police helicopter and a local fell rescue team were called in to assist with the search operation, but a second person had not been found as darkness fell.
Police appealed for any information about the crash.
