A POPULAR walking path will be diverted to prevent flooding.

Councillors decided yesterday to allow Yorkshire Water to move the path over Ramsden Reservoir near Holme.

A new spillway is being built at the reservoir to prevent flooding during heavy rain. A footbridge will be built over the spillway.

Kirklees Council’s Planning and Highways Committee approved the change.

Committee member Clr Ken Sims, who represents the area, spoke in favour of the move.

The Holme Valley South Conservative said: “This is a necessary thing that they have to do. I would rather see this done than have a major flood.”

Clr Sims, who visited the area, said he was happy that Yorkshire Water had canvassed local opinion.

He said: “I was quite impressed. I think they’ve been very careful in looking after everything. I think they’ve gone out of the way to consult.”
