SAVERS have received a larger than usual annual dividend from a local credit union.

Kirklees-based Castle and Minster Credit Union paid out 2.5% at its annual meeting.

General manager Geoff Brown said in recent years members had received around 2%.

The not-for-profit savings and loan co-operative has more than 2,000 members in Kirklees.

It was formed in 1996 and is based in Byram Arcade, Huddersfield.

Mr Brown said: "We encourage people to be provident with money and save and we allow them to borrow without being ripped off by so-called `loan sharks' and doorstep lenders."

Last year the Castle and Minster linked up with two other credit unions to make one larger limited company.

It incorporated Brackenhall and Sheepridge Enterprise (Base) and Colne Valley Savers.

Credit unions are regulated by the Financial Services Authority.
