DIWALI celebrations will take place throughout the town today to mark the Hindu Festival of Lights.

The celebration is a significant festival in Hinduism, Buddhism and Sikhism.

And today up to 1,000 people will attend a celebration at the town’s Hindu Temple at Zetland Street.

Kiran Bali, from the Temple, said: “Diwali is about prayer, worship and celebration.

“We hope to have people from all communities joining us.”

Leading up to Diwali today, children have dressed up as the Hindu avatar brothers Lord Rama and Lord Lakshman.

From noon people will light candles and feast on traditional food and Indian sweets.
