A dog died in a freak blaze at a flat in Rawthorpe last night.
Firefighters were called to the mainsonette in Brownroyd Avenue at 10.10pm but the fire had already burned itself out.
A fire brigade spokesman said the young woman who lives at the flat had gone out in the afternoon and left a mobile phone charging on her bed.
The charger overheated and bedding smouldered for several hours. A smoke detector went off but neighbours didn't hear it.
The woman returned home later that night and found her dog collapsed. The woman was treated at the scene by paramedics.
The bed was destroyed and the flat was heavily smoke-damaged.
