DOG wardens are bracing themselves for a busy time in the run up to Bonfire Night.

They fear many pets will be scared by fireworks and bonfires, unless their owners take extra care.

Now staff of Kirklees Council Environmental Services are encouraging all dog owners to keep their pets safe on and around November 5.

The council's dog warden service has responded to several reported incidents in previous years.

Dogs which have been left outside, or taken along to fireworks displays, have fled in panic only to be found later - often several miles away.

John Stead, senior animal welfare officer for Kirklees Council, said: "If you are a dog owner, please do not take your dog to a fireworks display.

"Keep your dog inside and try to ensure that a family member stays at home with the dog, when you know local fireworks displays are taking place.

"If you have to exercise your dog, please keep your dog on a lead and exercise it well away from bonfires and fireworks displays.

"Finally, if you know from previous experience that your dog is particularly frightened around Bonfire Night, speak to your vet.

"He or she can advise you of the various remedies available to relieve the stress and keep your dog calm."

He said the dog warden service was urging everyone to be vigilant and careful to prevent accidents involving themselves or their pets.
