A dog wedged in an open bedroom window had to be rescued by firefighters.

Neighbours spotted the home-alone Staffordshire bull terrier hanging paws-first out of the upstairs window.

One neighbour climbed a ladder to calm the stricken pooch while two women stood below holding a sheet in case the dog fell out.

Huddersfield fire crews were called to the semi-detached house in Glastonbury Drive in Golcar at 3.55pm yesterday.

Crew commander Kerry Blomfield and firefighter Phil Derrick, of White Watch, climbed ladders.

Another window was forced open before Kerry plucked the dog free and carried it to safety on his shoulders.

Watch commander Jimmy Johnstone saw the funny side and said: “It was like a scene from an old black and white movie when we got there.

“The neighbours did very well, though, and we thanked them for their efforts. The dog was pleased to see us and was wagging its tail.”

The dog had a drink of water and was left in the care of neighbours as its owner was out.
