A CAR PARK at a beauty spot has been named and shamed as the latest dogging and piking spot.

Now the car park at Wessenden Head Road, Meltham, is to be closed because of the seedy sex antics.

The site, less than a mile from a residential area, is being used as a venue where people indulge in exhibitionist sex while others watch.

Police have already promised a clampdown on similar behaviour at Scammonden after complaints from people living nearby.

And earlier this year the Examiner reported complaints about dogging at Castle Hill.

Simon Tidswell, of Kirklees Council's highways department, said they had agreed with the National Trust, which owns the Meltham land, to block the car park after reports of the activities.

He said: "We have heard that people might be using this car park for dubious activities.

"I don't know how often this happens or when and I don't know if the police have become involved. But it's something we will try to put a stop to."

Holme Valley North councillor Terry Lyons said: "If this kind of activity is going on up there it's unacceptable and needs to be stopped."

Mr Tidswell added that fly-tipping was also a major problem at Wessenden Head and this would contribute to the closure of the car park.

He went on: "Its location makes it very hard to trace the people responsible for the tipping and it usually has to be moved at the taxpayers' expense."

But he said materials there at the moment were for work being carried by the council.

"We are using the area to store material for the Penistone Feeder Route path, now called Dark Peak Link," he said.

"The material will be bagged and airlifted into locations along the cross- moorland route from Mount Road to Standedge in August.

"We have done the first airlift of material for the works on Wessenden Road bridleway."
