A man stole vodka after replacing his drug dependency with alcohol, a court heard.

Dominic Bloor, of Half Moon Street in Huddersfield town centre, was before Kirklees Magistrates’ Court.

He pleaded guilty to the theft from Tesco on February 10.

Magistrates heard that he entered the Viaduct Street store, removed the security tag from a bottle of vodka and hid it in his jacket.

The 39-year-old was then challenged as he tried to pay for other items at a self-service checkout.

Carl Kingsley, mitigating, said that his client had replaced his heroin addiction with a dependency on alcohol.

Magistrates sentenced Bloor to a nine-month community order with up to 10 days of rehabilitative activities.

He must also comply with a curfew for a week and pay £60 victim surcharge.
