A MELTHAM water skier is riding high on the way to the European Under-21s Championships

Dominic Wheldrick, 20, was selected last week, but put in a sterling performance at the British Youth Nationals.

The former Hulme Grammar School pupil competed in the tournament section which entails a jump, trick and slalom.

He won gold in the jump, silver in the trick and came fifth in the slalom.

The performance meant he was overall second in the country.

He first got involved in the sport when his father took the family out on Lake Windermere.

Next month he will compete for Team GB in the slalom event at the European Under-21 Championships.

Backed by the British Water-Ski Federation, Dominic will travel to France for the competition and leaves on August 10 – the day before his 21st birthday.

His 19-year-old sister Harriet has also represented Great Britain at knee-boarding.
