A NO-TRADE zone is to be set up in Emley to deter doorstep traders.

The trial project aims to eliminate doorstep criminals and is being set up for the first time in Kirklees.

Residents in Emley have joined forces with Kirklees Safer Communities Partnership, West Yorkshire Trading Standards, Kirklees Victim Support and Emley Neighbourhood Watch.

Lamp-post signs and door stickers in homes will warn all uninvited sales people - genuine or not - that they are not welcome in the village.

Residents will call the police and give descriptions of anyone failing to comply.

Clr Andrew Marchington, who chairs the Kirklees Safer Communities Partnership, said: "We want to reduce doorstep crime across the district and this new scheme will send out a strong message that cold callers and rogue traders are not welcome.

"We are also working hard to make sure other residents across the district report the problem.

"Doorstep criminals are ruthless and they get away with conning people out of money because they appear so confident.

"But saying `no' and showing them the door is all it takes to stop yourself from becoming their next victim."

Clr Marchington added: "This campaign is not aimed at damaging trade for genuine businesses who rely on door-to-door sales.

"We encourage these businesses to arrange appointments in advance, to carry formal identification and to always provide a landline number that the homeowner can check first."
