A HUDDERSFIELD headteacher has just missed out on a national honour.

Dora Plant, headteacher of Ashbrow Junior and Infant School in Sheepridge, was named the north of England’s best primary school headteacher in June and was shortlisted for the UK’s biggest teaching awards.

She was invited to London for last night’s UK Teaching Awards at the Theatre Royal on Drury Lane in London, televised on BBC2 and hosted by comedian Lenny Henry.

Dora was one of 86 finalists.

Winners were awarded a gold ‘Plato’, the teaching sector’s equivalent of the Golden Globe.

Awards were also presented by Oscar-winning actress Emma Thompson, patron Henry Winkler, education secretary Michael Gove and Strictly Come Dancing judge Craig Revel Horwood.

The Outstanding New Teacher of the Year was Kelly Steeples from Southdale CE Junior School in Ossett.

The 25-year-old has taught lessons dressed as Batman, a tribal leader and characters from Avatar, and has begun classes with Tai Chi to put pupils in the mood for learning.

The award winner for Headteacher of the Year was Anthony Hull, from Costessey Junior School in Norwich.
