A BROCKHOLES family is celebrating the birth of two sons in just over a year at Huddersfield’s birth centre.

History repeated itself for Liz Joy and partner Kevin Girdlestone when they found themselves at the Infirmary’s new unit for the SECOND time in just over 12 months.

The couple – who already have two sons Ronnie, three, and one-year-old Frankie – were there for the birth of Teddie at 8.30am on April 26.

Little Teddie was born just one year and 11 days apart from brother Frankie, in April last year.

Mum Liz always hoped she’d give birth at the midwife-led unit again.

But she wasn’t expecting it to be quite so soon.

She said: “We were adamant that after Frankie was born we wanted to have our next baby at the Birth Centre as it had been such a lovely experience for us.

“What we didn’t expect was to be back here quite so soon!

“But again it has been tremendous. Teddie came very quickly, yet we were all very relaxed thanks to the midwives.

“What also makes it special is that his dad gets to stay over with us and be involved so much all the way through.”

Teddie is a third son for the couple. Eldest boy Ronnie was also born at HRI in the former delivery ward.

Dad Kev, a plumber, said: “We came on a tour of the Birth Centre when it first opened and liked all the different, natural approaches to having a baby.

“The midwives are so relaxed they gave us so much reassurance.

“I was able to stay overnight so we were together as a family from the start and the care we received was fantastic.”

HRI’s Family Birth Centre opened in March 2008 after a massive review of maternity services across Huddersfield and Calderdale.

The stand-alone midwife unit replaced the former ward 14 and is made-up of six ensuite birthing rooms, two of which have birthing pools.

Birth centre manager Gina Augarde, said: “We were delighted to welcome Liz and Kev back again to have baby Teddie with us and for them to be so pleased twice over.”

Only mums without complications are able to give birth at the unit.

Those with problems in pregnancy or labour are transferred to Calderdale Royal Hospital, Halifax, where consultants and special care baby facilities are available.
