FIREFIGHTERS were called to this car fire on the M62 moments after dealing with a chemical spill on the opposite carriageway.

An engine fault caused the fire beneath the bonnet of the BMW on the eastbound carriageway near Scammonden Bridge at about 1.30pm yesterday.

The driver was unhurt.

They had been to the spillage about a mile after junction 22 on the westbound downhill stretch.

Two 50-gallon barrels of a chemical used to cure rubber had fallen from a lorry and split open.

Two lanes of the motorway were closed and the incident caused massive delays.
