Dozens of people of all faiths gathered in Huddersfield to remember the Paris terror attack victims.

They were at a Vigil for Peace at Huddersfield Parish Church last night.

And a special memorial to the dead will remain at the church all week.

The event was organised within hours of the horrific attacks on Friday night.

The Rev Simon Crook, curate at St Peter’s Church, said: “We decided on Saturday afternoon to organise something and we got together with the Huddersfield Interfaith Council, the Kirklees Faith Forum and the Churches Together in Huddersfield to arrange the service.

“It was termed a Vigil for Peace in response to the Paris attacks and other atrocities in the world.

“There were probably about 50 people there and represented among those gathered were Pakistani Christian, Muslim, Society of Friends, United Reformed Church, Sikh, Ahmadiyya Muslims, Bahá’í, Roman Catholic and Church of England.

“We had prayers and readings from different faiths and candles were lit in a tangible sign of solidarity for those who have been maimed by the recent attacks.

“All those present were unified in the quest for peace between nations and all religions”.

A memorial featuring the French tricolor has now been placed in the Chancel of the church and will remain there until Friday.

Mr Crook said: “Anyone who wants to come in and light a candle, or simply share their thoughts, are welcome to do so”.

The attacks have been condemned by Rabetah, the Batley-based Institute of Islamic Scholars.

Moulana Hashim Sacha, who chairs Rabetah, said, “Terrorist acts of any kind are against the true nature of Islam no matter how it is packaged. Killing the innocent to prove a point is truly the work of misguided people. Terrorism has no place in any society whether it be on the grounds of faith or no faith.

“We hope the authorities in Paris and Beirut use the full force of the law to find the guilty and the world addresses the root of such actions.

“Our sincerest condolences go to the innocent victims and the families of all those affected. We pray that Lord Almighty gives them patience in this time of need.

Muslims stand alongside our brothers and sisters against terrorism of any kind.”
