Drama enveloped Dewsbury town centre on Friday evening as police were called to call down a man who scaled their own headquarters.

Shocked onlookers watched as an unknown man was brought down from the roof of Dewsbury Police Station on Aldams Road.

A picture of the man, who appears to be sat on a high window ledge, was pictured by passer-by Janine Mortimer and shared on Facebook.

Aldams Road and the Asda footbridge, next to the Police Station, were shut off to the public until 9pm as negotiating officers were called outside to coax the man down.

After about half an hour of negotiations, the man was brought down and arrested.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: “Enquiries are ongoing today after a man was brought down from the roof of Dewsbury Police Station yesterday evening.

“Officers negotiated with the 27-year-old man who had made his way onto the roof of the station at about 7.26pm.

“He came down at about 7.52pm and was subsequently arrested on suspicion of causing a public nuisance.

“The man remains in custody this morning.”
