TINY Pippa McCluskey is the apple of her dad's eye.

And for Darren McCluskey and wife Serena she is the perfect end to a long, hard struggle.

For more than five years, Darren, 35, battled against kidney failure.

But he was then offered a kidney by his own dad, John, and underwent a life-saving and life-changing operation, which was a complete success.

"It meant everything," said Serena, 34. "We could not plan for anything in our future and certainly nothing like a family.

"We couldn't even plan for holidays as we didn't know how Darren would be.

"But now, thanks to the operation, he is a different person and we have a full life.

"Pippa is the perfect part of that. She was born four months ago in Huddersfield and now we are a complete family."

The couple live on Lockwood Scar at Newsome, and have been together four years.

Darren is a manager at Interface Fabrics in Meltham and Serena is a research fellow at Salford University.

Since the transplant she has also become a volunteer with the Yorkshire Kidney Research Fund and is a champion of transplants and the organ donor register.

She said: "This is National Transplant Week and Darren's story shows how people can benefit.

"He was very ill for the last 12 months before the operation, but managed to avoid dialysis.

"When it came to the operation both his dad and his brother Steven offered to donate and both were matches. It meant a six-hour operation at St James' Hospital in Leeds for Darren and his dad, but it worked perfectly.

"There is still a reluctance on some people's parts to donate. But I think it is often because they are being asked at a bad time, when a relative has just died.

"If people signed up to the organ donor register that decision is already made and the person has made their views known."
