A man was caught drink-driving when paramedics treated him following a crash.

Stephen Heppenstall, of Burnlee Road in Holmfirth, clipped another vehicle as he headed home from the pub on February 20.

The airbag was deployed, hitting him in his face and causing him to suffer a bloody nose.

Paramedics called to the scene of the incident on New Mill Road then contacted police after forming the impression that the 47-year-old had been drinking.

He was arrested and taken to hospital where he provided a blood sample.

This showed that he had 124 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.

The legal limit is 80 milligrammes.

Mohammed Arif, mitigating, said that his client normally leaves his car at the pub after drinking there.

He told magistrates: “On this occasion for some unknown reason he has got into his vehicle.

“He’s then clipped a vehicle, the airbag has then been deployed and gone into his face and paramedics were called.”

Magistrates banned the engineer from driving for a year.

He must also pay £280 fine, £85 costs and £28 victim surcharge.
