DRINKERS in Huddersfield can play their part in helping poverty-stricken Africans, thanks to a scheme from pub company Head of Steam.

For every pint bought in its pubs the company will give 5p to the WaterAid charity.

Pubs taking part include Head of Steam venues in St George’s Square, Huddersfield, Newcastle and Liverpool..

WaterAid works to improve access to water and sanitation in poor countries to help prevent the spread of disease.

The pub chain has agreed to pay for the £15,000 cost of a WaterAid project in Tienfala in Mali, which is in Saharan Africa.

The area is particularly deprived and is in the grip of an epidemic of trachoma, an eye disease transmitted via unclean water.

It is one of the biggest causes of blindness in the developing world.

WaterAid is building a new well for clean water that is accessible to everyone, including disabled people and children.

It is also improving specialised toilet facilities.

The Head of Steam company has previously paid for projects with WaterAid, Oxfam and Medicins Sans Frontieres.
