A CAMPAIGN has been launched to encourage youngsters to use buses.

Bus operator Metro is introducing School Plus MetroCards, which will make bus travel cheaper and easier for young people aged five to 16 and full-time school students aged 16 to 18.

They are available from today.

The tickets, which cost £5.50 for a week or £20.50 for a month, will be valid for unlimited travel on all West Yorkshire buses displaying the Metro logo, at any time on any day of the week.

School Plus MetroCards, which have to be used in conjunction with a Young Person's or a Scholar's PhotoCard, will be on sale at Metro travel centres, Metro bus stations and post offices.

Metro chairman Clr Mick Lyons said: "Our new cards will give young people the freedom to get out and about on buses.

"They will also help save on the costs of individual bus journeys, whether they are to school and back or just out and about.

"School Plus MetroCards can provide better value than some other special offer tickets, which can only be used at certain times or on certain journeys.

"They will help introduce a whole new generation to public transport," he added.

Other types of discount tickets available from Metro include cards for anyone up to the age of 22 and mature students in full-time education.
