A DRIVER was arrested after a car careered off a main Huddersfield road.

The white Vauxhall Nova smashed into a Ford Fiesta parked in Wakefield Road outside tropical fish shop Aquarium Management just after 5am today.

The owner, who asked not to be named, had been in early to catch up on paperwork and rushed out.

He said: "There was a woman outside the car who was bleeding from her head and legs.

"I got some towels and helped her until the ambulance arrived. The Fiesta is my wife's car and it's been bent in half by the impact."

The Nova also demolished part of a wall and sent two coping stones through the shop window.

The Nova driver, a 20-year-old man from Waterloo, was arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

He was in custody at Huddersfield police station today. The woman, who had been in the car, is not thought to be seriously hurt.
