A MAN thwarted armed robbers by making a quick getaway when they threatened to shoot him.

The 62-year-old man drew up outside a house on New Hey Road between Fixby and Ainley Top when two men knocked at his car window at 8pm last night.

The robbers had a silver handgun and demanded that he open the door or he would be shot.

But the victim quickly slipped the car into reverse and escaped.

He then drove away along New Hey Road.

Sgt Tim O'Sullivan, of Huddersfield police, said: "The victim noticed a car parked nearby on the road with its hazard warning lights on.

"It may be this was the robbers' getaway car or it may be simply someone who had stopped to use a mobile phone."

One of the robbers wore a balaclava, is 5ft 10ins tall and slim.

He wore dark clothes and blue and white trainers.

His accomplice is smaller.
