A road-sweeping lorry ended up in a hole - literally!

The driver pulled on to the pavement on Edgerton Road, Edgerton, to let a line of traffic past - then bang!

A large concrete manhole cover gave way under the weight and one of the back wheels fell in.

The back of the nine-tonne lorry ended up on its rear bar and driveshaft, leaving the vehicle jammed.

Kirklees workman Ian Devine, 37, of Longwood, was walking along the pavement using a blower to push the leaves into the gully for his workmate in the lorry to sweep up at 10.30am on Wednesday.

Ian said: "The roadsweeper only goes about 5mph and sometimes has to go backwards and forwards to clear all the leaves.

"This means traffic can build up and the sweeper then pulls on to the pavement to let vehicles past.

"This time I heard a crunch and saw the wheel down the manhole.

"It was just one of those things, but we've never known a manhole give way like that before."

A recovery vehicle shifted the roadsweeper.
