A LORRY driver was badly trapped after a motorway crash.

Firefighters battled for over 40 minutes to free the man after his lorry smashed into the back of another on the long uphill stretch of the M62 close to the West Yorkshire border between junction 21 at Milnrow and junction 22 at Windy Hill shortly after 5am today.

Three of the four lanes were closed while teams of firefighters used hyrdralic cutting and spreading gear to free him.

John Wilkinson, watch manager at Heywood fire station in Greater Manchester, said: "The man was badly trapped and had suffered serious leg and arm injuries."

He was taken to Rochdale Infirmary.

The smash caused long hold-ups.
