NEW figures show that Yorkshire drivers support strong anti-drink-driving measures - even though they are more likely to get behind the wheel after boozing.

The research by Privilege car insurance showed that 30% of drivers in Yorkshire and Humberside admitted to driving when over the limit.

The national average is 26%.

But 60% of motorists in the region support the fitting of alcolocks to the cars of convicted drink-drivers. This is 5% higher than the UK-wide figure.

A steering wheel alcolock requires the driver to give a breath sample before the ignition can be turned.

Privilege spokes woman Kaye Syred welcomed the figures

She said: "The driving public is sending a clear message to the Government to `toughen up' on drink- drivers.

"One fifth of all motorists convicted of drink-driving every year are re-offenders."

Last year 560 people were killed in accidents involving drivers who were over the legal alcohol limit.
